Woolf Works Wednesday - November Edition
Come along and enjoy our last social night of 2014!
We have two fabulous guest speakers:
Aileen Chen, CEO of Belly Armor shares her entrepreneurial journey since launching her business five years ago - including some bumps in the road, takeaways and tips for startups and for balancing (at least trying to) family, work, and self. Belly Armor has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal as well as People Magazine, and its products are now sold in more than 30 countries.
Simin Kayes, Cofounder of Paper Lantern: Paper Lantern is a boutique craft distillery producing luxury liquors and liqueurs for sale throughout Southeast Asia and the rest of the world.
We also have a wonderful group of artists holding a group exhibition:
Synergy presents the work of six overseas-born painters and printmakers living in Singapore. As the title suggests, this group of artists regularly collaborate to support each other in their respective professional practices. With some artists only recent arrivals, and others here for almost 25 years, this exhibition brings together a diverse group whose work reflects a shared interest in their immediate surroundings.
Merryn J Trevethan
A recent arrival to Singapore, Merryn J Trevethan is an Australian visual artist exploring the uncertainty of perception in densely populated urban environments flooded with visual information. Merryn holds a Masters of Fine Arts from Monash University and is a Certified Artist Educator for Golden Artist Colors acrylic paints. www.merryntrevethan.com
Jennifer Lim is an Australian-Peranakan artist and printmaker based in Singapore since 2012. A graduate of the Australian National University, Jennifer holds a combined BA in Visual Arts/Asian Studies (Japanese). Her cross-cultural background and interest in language form the basis for current exploration into Singapore history. www.jenniferlimdesign.com
Originally from the UK, Julie Williams has lived in France and Australia. A graduate of the National Art School, Sydney, Julie moved to Singapore last year. Her studio in the historic gold rush town of Hill End provides inspiration for her investigation into local Chinese history. Her new home of Tiong Bahru has helped her find a new direction for her studies into natural and man-made surrounds. www.artchisg.com
Inspired by her experience in Singapore, Clare Haxby's 'Singapore Landmarks' series references traditional and modern architecture and was launched at The Fullerton Hotel in 2013. Clare trained in Fine Art & Printmaking at Kingston University, England, and has designed textiles for companies including Liberty's of London. Her drawings and paintings are collected by the Victoria and Albert museum in London. www.clarehaxby.com
UK-born Jane is a mixed-media printmaker and member of Cardiff Print Workshop and completed her MA in America. Jane has lived and worked in the USA, China and Singapore. Her current work uses embedded objects, text, staining and wax to obscure and reveal images as she explores aspects of memory and her matrilineal heritage. www.cardiffprintworkshop.com
Alison Wilson received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK and studied printmaking at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Alison’s recent artwork reflects her interest in natural history subjects observed in Singapore as well as the human desire to interact with, interpret and make a mark on the environment. Her work has been exhibited in the UK, Spain and Singapore.
